We’re paying $1.64 a pound for scrap bronze from Statues, Old Plumbing Fixtures, and Commercial Electrical pieces.

Yes, and they were done by Alexander Proctor, as is the Indian Maiden statue which is now tucked away in a corner of the Art Museum since some thought it too offensive and/or salacious. Proctor also did T.R. Roosevelt in Portland, and many other monumental works, including the statue of the traitor Robert E. Lee which still stands in Dallas. But Proctor specialized in animals, including the horses for statutes of patriots such as William Tecumseh Sherman, Ulysses S. Grant, and John Logan. So he seems to have mostly avoided the many lucrative commissions from the “lost cause” movement and the post Birth of a Nation KKK confederate monument boom. More on the fascinating history of yankees making money off confederate statues below. Apparently one statue was torn down by former rebel soldiers, because they thought it looked too much a Union soldier.
And most of them were – the factories simply used their generic Union soldier molds, replaced the U.S. belt buckle with one marked C.S.A., and shipped it down south.
