According to the Institutional Research website, the year before President Schill came to UO we had 2,066 faculty and 1,393 senior administrators and OA’s. As of this November, we have 2,075 faculty, and 1,546 senior administrators and OA’s:
That is an 0.4% increase in faculty and an 11% increase in administrators. The number of classified staff and GE’s has actually dropped slightly.
You can also break out the 0.4% faculty increase by rank:
TTF have increased from 735 to 807, or by 9.8%. NTTF regular from 846 to 906, or 7.1%. Adjunct/Visiting have decreased by 57%. So at least the change in the mix is toward more permanent faculty jobs.
You can drill down on the IR website to see where the administrative hiring has been. Apparently not all of it is for people to help me figure out Concur. E.g.:
UO currently has 57 job openings for administrators and OA’s on the careers website. Some of these are to replace people who have left since November, but many appear to be new positions:

SHARED SACRIFICES!
always beware of data without better inspection
Yes faculty growth has been small
but its best, for clarity, to separate out NTTF and TTF
as explained earlier there was a net 72 increase in TTF
since Schill, modest, but that’s about 10% for TTF
Remember last year the 90 NTTF that Marcus sacked?
so the combination of +72 and -90 is part of reason that overall its 0.4% on paper – but one always needs to do better
analysis of this kind of data when “faculty” are lumped into
on Category (and this might have to do with the Union).
of more concern is that GE is NOT rising
that’s not the right profile for a Research University
I don’t think Schill knows what a Research University is
Disclaimer: I’m one of the bloated 11%.
Can someone provide more background? Is the shrinking proportion of faculty this year actually a bad thing? Or maybe it’s part of a reversion to a natural balance. (Or even just plain random variation.) What do these numbers look like at equivalent institutions?
“Officer of Administration” sounds like a cushy sinecure worthy of resentment. In my experience, it seems to mean comp significantly lower than the average faculty, no union representation, and (perhaps worst of all) pointed exclusion from faculty drinking events.
We don’t technically need people here to plunge the toilets. But maybe the faculty have better things to do?
This post was not meant to denigrate the work of OAs, without whom UO would sink into the abyss of a new dark age.
What, aren’t we already in a new dark age? Is further sinking possible?
… made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.
Totally believable. After all, you are much too polite and respectful to denigrate anyone.
too bad “last hired, first fired” doesn’t apply to all these new OA positions.
what’s up with the growth of faculty in 15/16 then the decline in 16/17?
So increased the number of OAs within his personal sub-unit from 7 to 16? Do we know what for?
I see a 0.4% increase in Faculty and a 1.0% increase in the total of the remaining lines. Nice headline, though.
The real story that I see here is the erosion of the classified staff union. I looked for data I thought I had about the number of OAs and classified staff from about 15 years ago, but I was unable to put my hands on it. My recollection (warning:very hazy) is that there were “only” about 800 OAs in the early 2000s, and that the conversion of staff positions to OA positions had already been underway for many years at that time. Perhaps one of your union-affiliated readers has those figures.
