The Administration has also sent this around, with a helpful FAQ:

NOTE: This message is being sent to the PI list and OVPRI Center & Institute Directors.

Dear Colleagues,

As announced last week, the university and United Academics have reached tentative agreements on several key issues including career instructional faculty FTE for AY 20-21, an expectation of continued employment for our career instructional and research faculty, and a progressive pay reduction plan.

Employee and Labor Relations has added answers to frequently asked questions regarding these agreements. The FAQ includes further explanation of the terms of the tentative agreements and a section specifically for research-related information.

Please reach out to Employee and Labor Relations at [email protected] or [email protected] if you have any questions or need further assistance.

Best regards,

Missy Matella
Senior Director, Employee and Labor Relations

Remember the Classified Staff. We’re all in it together. You know? Working in those classrooms / admin don’t care.

I have been hearing through the grapevine that SEIU is balking at any talk of participation in a PPR plan, even though many classified at UO would be protected by the salary floor that UA established for faculty, which will likely extend to all employee groups.

I’m unclear about how the PPR works. Is the first $45K exempt from a pay cut for all workers? For example, if someone earns $50k/year, does the pay cut only apply to the $5K after the first $45 is exempt? Or does the pay cut apply to the entire $50K? The answer might affect how some classified staff feel about the plan. Can anyone enlighten us?

The rates shown are the average tax rates. So people with a base salary below $45K pay nothing. People with a $50K base pay a total tax of $286. People at $60K pay 1.71% of salary, or $1029.

It would be interesting to have data on pay cuts at other universities. Anecdotally, I know some with bigger cuts than us, and some with smaller. But my N isn’t big.

I put a link to the University of Arizona published cuts
about 3 weeks ago on this blog. I would say those cuts are
similar to what has been proposed here, perhaps a bit larger.

Classified have been laid off and participate in Workshare as well. They bear the brunt of the physical prep for re-opening. I hope they do balk until we see upper admin take a larger pay cut. You don’t realistically need $400,000 to live in Eugene! IMO UA should have balked a little harder as well, but apparently that wasn’t in the cards. As usual, “those who have the gold make the rules” and upper admin is keen on losing as little gold as possible even though some monthly pay checks equal a classified staff yearly paycheck.

Note: Athletic Dept also laid off about 80 or so classified as reported by UOM post during Spring Term.
