Universities lobbying OHA and Gov Brown to resume football practice

James Crepea in the Oregonian, here:

“We’re still trying to figure out if we can return to practice,” [Duck AD Rob Mullens] said on Oregon’s in-house radio show Friday, his first public appearance in since May 15. “So if we can’t return to practice then obviously that has an impact. If we are able to get to that and then we are able to return to competition, then obviously that would be depending on whatever the local and state guidance was. Whatever we do from an event standpoint will be under the guidance of the Oregon Health Authority and Lane County Public Health.

… Contact sports, including football, are not permitted under current OHA guidelines.

“My understanding is that the universities are working with the Oregon Health Authority and local public health on how to safely hold walk-through practices while complying with current health and safety guidelines,” [Gov. Brown Spokesperson Charles Boyle] said. “We continue to be in close communication with them about how Oregon’s college football teams can safely prepare for the season while protecting players, coaches, and their communities from COVID-19. If necessary, my understanding is that OHA can modify their guidance regarding sports training if it is safe to do so, without an additional executive order.”

An OHA spokesman did not respond to an inquiry from The Oregonian/OregonLive as to whether the agency would amend its guidelines to allow the Ducks and Beavers to practice later this month.

“We’re still trying to figure out if we can return to practice,” [Duck AD Rob Mullens] said.

So how are they going to figure that out?

I guess they’ll just try it…and if nobody dies then it was ok!

I don’t know if I would trust the source, but this morning Sports Illustrated told us, “The Big Ten and Pac 12 will cancel their fall seasons tomorrow,” [radio host Dan] Patrick reported. “The ACC and the Big 12 are on the fence. The SEC is trying to get a delay to have teams join them.”

Well, the MAC cancelled its football season. They’re the pay for play patsies P5s use to fill their schedules. I gotta think if tomato cans are giving up a check that underwrites their departments for the year, that portends nothing good.

Dan Patrick, who hosts a nationally syndicated radio show, stated the Pac12 will cancel the football season tomorrow. If so, then the flagship’s AD will have their handout for that loan.

I’m gonna guess that the guys giving the money to the conference to re-lend to unis will demand student loan money siphoned off for debt servicing. Sure as hell, that’ll impact the academic side. But, they were going all on line anyway, so who needs profs???

For sure…at most schools, they will take that loan, keep paying coaches the $5 million (maybe knock it down to $4.5 million as a show of solidarity), then just add the loan payback to the subsidy from the general fund and hope no one cares that they made sure to keep the highest paid, paid, while taking more from students already struggling with debt.

I don’t know if I would trust the source, but there’s not gonna be a football season this fall. (Or any fall sports.)

The Pac-12 CEO Group of presidents and chancellors voted to postpone the league’s football season on Tuesday with the hope of playing in the spring, according to multiple reports. The Pac-12′s decision came less than two hours after the Big Ten did the same, as the two Power 5 conferences joined the MAC and Mountain West in canceling their fall football seasons. There are now 53 of 130 FBS programs to announce they won’t play in the fall.

What’s the point of a university without football?
