a likely preview of the first duck home football game …

I guess UO athletic dept is trying to support the covid eruption in Lane County, in hopes of assisting return to remote learning this Fall. Always looking out for the “academic side,” as we say. And I’m sure the local hospitals will appreciate our patronage!

Good thing public safety and mask mandates only matter when it comes to keeping small businesses from collapsing, not when a huge corporation might suffer a slight amount or God forbid that the u of o or the government might have to take a hit to their pocketbook. It’s this type of hypocrisy that’s driving the anti-vax movement.

    • just different says:

No. It’s being disingenuously weaponized by them.

What’s driving antivaxxers and antimaskers, at least in the case of covid, is the same old white grievance politics about “losing their country.” They’ve constructed an alternate reality where they don’t need to exercise collective responsibility for a collective they don’t see themselves as belonging to, under the leadership of a government they refuse to recognize as legitimate.

In other words, there is no amount of vaccine safety data or public health communication that will change their minds, because that’s not what’s bothering these people. Just listen to the kind of rhetoric they use if you have any doubts about that.

      • honest Uncle Bernie says:

racializing the covid antivaxx movement — making it a matter of white supremacy — is not just different. It’s just nuts.

        • just different says:

No one is “racializing” anything. Look at the statistics about who’s refusing the vaccine, who’s showing up to scream at school boards, which politicians and media figures are stroking them, and what language they use.

These are not persuadable people who have understandable concerns about vaccine safety. They’re people who are filled with rage about their status in present-day America and vax refusal is just another fuck-you. “Not all,” of course, but there is no doubt about the main driver behind our appallingly low rate of full vaccination. What bothers you so much about this obvious fact?

Try as they might, football will not overrule track.
