University hires new VP for Finance and Administration for $236K

5/4/2013: The university has successfully concluded an open national search for a new VP for Finance and Administration. The president reports to the faculty:

“Our former VPFA did an exemplary job of helping keeping the university on a sound financial footing in a difficult economic environment and doing so in a most transparent manner. Our new VPFA has the experience and vision to continue that success as the university moves forward.”

The salary is a substantial $236K:

But the new hire has many years of experience as VPFA at smaller universities, and $236K seems to be the competitive wage for a university with 25,000 students and a research budget of $160M a year. Plus, the university is not taking much risk with a one year contract, and must pay accordingly.

Oh wait. Sorry. The above is the deal for OSU’s new VPFA, Glenn Ford. Here at UO, our VPFA is Jamie Moffitt, and we pay her $270K.

She was hired in 2012 after a failed search for an outside candidate. She was on the search committee that rejected the other applicants – no conflict of interest there! Her previous financial experience seems to consist of a few years managing the budget for the UO law school, and then 18 months or so doing the same for the UO athletic department. During which time she proved her loyalty by hiding the details of the strange and expensive deals between Dave Frohnmayer and Duck booster Pat Kilkenny, whom he had appointed athletic director. Pretty risky to appoint an outsider who might not understand the benefits of “The Oregon Way”. And she’s proving her loyalty again, by hiding UO’s budget projections from the UO faculty:

This would be a good time for a refresher on the timeline (dates, amounts, and significant events surrounding them) on donations from Kilkenny’s Lucky Duck foundation to Frohnmayer’s Fanconi foundation.

You are a true idiot, Truth.

I can understand that you don’t like hearing the facts. How much money have you billed HLGR to hurl insults on this blog?

PK has donated to FARF since 2002 and has continued giving large sums of money in 2011, 2012, and 2013. I’m sorry that these facts eviscerate your theory, but you’re a shithead for contorting a personal tragedy (DF lost two daughters; PK’s college roommate’s child died of FA) into a nefarious conspiracy scheme. Say whatever you want about DF and PK, but leave Fanconi Anemia out of it.

Doggone it, the UO is the FLAGSHIP school in the OUS system. Our administrators deserve salaries, Beamers, and other perks commensurate with their high positions! Its the responsibility of the unwashed masses (faculty, staff and students), through low pay and high tuition, to support our administrators in the life styles that they so richly deserve at a flagship institution like UO. This is especially true in these times of declining state support of higher education. Thus the 6% increase in tuition and the miniscule COLAs for faculty and staff. Note, too, that the administration has pegged COLAs at just about what the union dues cost members so that the net take-home pay increase is close to zero. Well, maybe not quite that bad since union dues are tax deductible.

COLA? I’d love a real COLA.

It is hard to see any significant change from the days of Frances Dyke to those of Moffitt. The same kind of obfuscation of the numbers; and I am beginning to suspect the same fundamental incompetence to generate a genuine budget.

The high salaries for the administrators seem to be justifiable only as a reward for loyalty to other higher administrators, and not for competence, transparency and promotion of the academic mission.

You know, there are several prominent politicians who follow this blog, and media from around Oregon and the country. I wonder what Salem thinks of Jamie Moffitt’s redacted forecasts, as she tries to stick it to the faculty while cashing her inflated paycheck. She’s not contributing any more to the public good than our Salem representatives, yet look at how she’s raking it in.

      Pressure from Salem welcome.

It’s time for the Senate to step up and take charge of the budget.

For the record OSU’s research budget is now $180 million, compared to UO’s $100 million. And if our administrators were as inbred as yours we’d probably have had to go union too. Good luck with it all!

If I could, I’d offer to sell you the “flagship” modifier. Unfortunately it is neither worth much, nor in my power to sell.

    • Anonymous 05/07/2013

If UO is a flagship then OSU is a spaceship.

Here we go again, U of O Matters calling for another Admin’s head. Don’t worry, when this one is gone they’ll hire another who you can go after. They’ll find someone else for you to belittle and insult in the name of your blog. You’ll come up with catchy nicknames for them and deride every move they make. Others will soon jump on board and the hay forks will get dusted off once again, although they don’t seem to gather much dust with you.

Constantly calling for people to be fired is sticky business my friend. You never seem to be satisfied with anyone.

It is unfortunately true that the record on hiring senior administrators has been so poor. I wish it were otherwise, but the pattern is undeniable.

For all its faults, UOM might…might help to correct this trend.

I do not think Moffitt’s record so far justifies her compensation.

  6. UO Matters 05/06/2013

Uh, where do I say she should be fired?

    • Anonymous 05/06/2013

Seems to me that is where you are headed once again.

    • UO Matters 05/06/2013

Nah, she’s pretty competent. I just want her to stop hiding info from the faculty. You think asking nicely works?

    • Anonymous 05/06/2013

Nothing in that paragraph strikes me as “nah, she’s pretty competent” You are suggesting/implying that she is incompetent given lack of experience. There is no way you are using that lack of experience to suggest that is the reason she is hiding. The implication I draw from your words here is that she is inexperienced and incompetent.

    • UO Matters 05/06/2013

      Infer away.

    • Anonymous 05/06/2013

      Dog on competence

She may be competent and she certainly is a better communicator in the room
than DYke but a) she is not at all transparent and b) she does not listen
      to rational arguments very well.

      This tends to reduce confidence.
