UO paying tenured full professor $327K to teach zero classes

Last updated on 03/25/2016

Note: This deal was done before President Schill arrived. The blame should go to Coltrane, or whichever of UO’s many other recent presidents or interims put this in de Kluyver’s contract and gave him raises while UO’s business school slowly sank and then disappeared from the US News rankings.

UO Management Professor Cornelis “Kees” de Kluyver:

Apparently his performance review as business school dean did not go well:

A few months later Around the O had the story of his contract non-renewal, here. While Kluyver collects $327K to teach nothing, UO is paying an interim a similar amount to do the dean’s job, while we search for a permanent replacement.

Kluyver wasn’t at UO long enough to earn a sabbatical, which in any case would only have paid 60% of this.  In fall he plans to go on the “Tenure Reduction Plan”, meaning three more years at 50% pay, in exchange for what is typically a 50% teaching load. For a research inactive LCB prof 50% would be 2-3 courses a year.

I wonder what, if anything, he’ll teach then? His predecessor Jim Bean was supposed to teach after he was forced out as Interim Provost, but instead Johnson Hall gave him a series of administrative sinecures, until he eventually found gainful employment back east.

Needless to say regular UO faculty do not get these sorts of deals – the administrators only give them to other administrators.

How’s his German? They’ve lost a few adjuncts to the cuts and could use help with intro classes.

    Disgusting.

Someone should tell Chuck Lillis that UOM found one of the “deadwood professors” he was complaining to the Board about. In Lillis’s own building.

Some of it is about lame duck profs, but most of it is just about power and control. A certain board member would not shut up about wanting to fire Harbaugh. He gleefully toyed with the idea of using the records leak as an excuse to get rid of him, and would gladly have paid whatever the inevitable lawsuit would cost. Probably the only thing that got in the way was the potential for Harbaugh to get his job back, even though he’d get taken off the job for a few years while the lawyers duked it out. I think this culminated with a cringe worthy public tantrum questioning why tenure is still a thing.

I’d love to hear more about the glee.

Yes this is a most excellent use of the BOT – fucking fixate about a random faculty member and his blog. There are actual REAL issues to focus on at the UO that are serious – what will it take for the BOT to stop flying up its own ass …

That’s two, but the one cuss-word policy does not apply to free speech discussions.

Soon, the BOT will need to experience turn-over–including of the chair.

and yet I as referring to the pet donkey that we keep in the BOT woodshed …

Kees’s scam is more lucrative that you think. As dean he was paid for 12 months work. Now he’s on a 9 month contract for the same annual pay. So Coltrane gave him a 33% monthly raise to teach nothing.

And you should emphasize that Mike Schill had nothing to do with this.

Good point about Schill, note added.

The 63 NTTFs and pro-tems that CAS is laying off got 3 months warning, at best, to find a new job while still teaching. Kees didn’t just get more than a year’s notice – we did give him tenure after all – he got $327K to teach nothing.

Why didn’t the CAS NTTF’s get enough notice to enter the regular academic job market cycle that starts in January? Because Coltrane ignored CAS Dean Andrew Marcus’s warning to Coltrane about the disastrous budget hole he’d left behind at CAS after Gottfredson promoted him to provost. Schill had to tell Marcus sorry, but he’d have to clean up Coltrane’s mess. $327K would have eased the transition for a lot of NTTF’s, and their students – but Coltrane gave it all to Kees.

The business school seems to have money to throw around. Does it contribute to bailing out any other school, or does CAS alone take the hit?
