UO’s HLGR lawyers make bank off Bowl of Ducks insurance policy

Jack Moran has the story in the RG here:

The University of Oregon has accepted a $242,000 settlement deal to end a legal dispute over bonuses the UO paid to then-head football coach Chip Kelly and his staff for the 2012-13 season.

“The university is glad we were able to reach a settlement agreement and now we are looking forward to the upcoming season,” UO spokesman Tobin Klinger said.

The university had paid a nearly $490,000 premium for an insurance policy the UO says it thought would cover all incentive bonuses Kelly and his assistants earned in the 2012-13 season.

After the highly successful season, the UO paid out bonuses totaling nearly $688,000 and sought reimbursement under its policy. The insurer refused.

Financially, it appears the university would have been better off not buying the insurance at all, as the lawsuit settlement doesn’t even cover the cost of the premium the UO paid. …

Duck Associate Athletic Director Eric Roedl, who agreed to this $490,000 contract without understanding it, has been fired:

Just kidding, Rob Mullens gave him another raise:

So how much did HLGR bill UO for settling this case for 50¢ on the dollar? I don’t know, but judging by the long docket below, they probably did OK at ~$300 per. Here’s hoping PURMIT picked up their tab:

They paid $490,000. This was to cover “maximum bonuses”. I wonder what that amount could have been? It sounds like it was for less than the $688,000 paid. Would they take out insurance for $490,000 to cover $400,000 in maximum bonuses? $500,000?

I could imagine it is worth something to smooth out the year-to-year bonus payments, but the insurance company must be charging enough to profit so this seems like a good “self insurance” situation where you put aside a little to cover the ups and downs and don’t charge yourself 10% extra.

  2. Another million bucks down the drain 05/10/2016

Since all departments are now getting taxed an extra 2%, why are we only hiring 20 new faculty this Fall? Athletics alone should be a couple million bucks in the bank. The answer seems to be that they lied about all departments cutting back. In addition, here’s another drain of a million bucks that could have gone towards lower tuition or more professors.

    On faculty hires:

it might be important to know how many offers of positions were declined (this happened in our department). For many reasons, the UO is currently not perceived as an attractive place to be compared to other institutions.

    • Another million bucks down the drain 05/10/2016

And yet the administration was boldly confident that they’d be able to have their hires in place by Fall, which is why they were rushing to issue all those layoffs when they did.

    • Max Powers 05/10/2016

Not just on faculty hires: The word is out in circles that the culture is toxic, even among decent admins. Yes there are decent admins out there.

      • Let the games begin 05/10/2016

There are a number of excellent and caring admins here! Unfortunately, they too are crushed under the thumb of incompetence and a lack of stern leadership.

  4. Let the games begin 05/10/2016

Athletics wants to siphon every penny they can get out of academics, and we all know this is a one way street. Athletics is only a fair weather friend to academics. I guess in order to be a success at this institution one need only drive their department into the ground and excel at wasting money. Put your foot down, Schill, and do something about this monumental waste we are seeing from athletics with the university’s name attached to it. Bowl of ducks, bowls of dicks, sexual assault victims, suspended basketball players — where do the lawsuits end and the responsibility begin???? Make athletics admin and staff responsible for their poor choices. How many lawsuits must we pounded with or involved in when many of them were avoidable to begin with????
