At-large positions on the governing board are volunteer posts with nominees selected by the governor. The governor will submit her choice to the Oregon Senate, which in turn votes on whether to confirm nominees.
Those interested in applying should contact University Secretary Angela Wilhelms, who can provide more detail on executive appointment processes and deadlines. She can be reached at [email protected] or 541-346-5561.
Perhaps Governor Brown will use this opportunity to appoint someone to the Board who knows something about higher education.
As SB 270 wound its way through the legislature five years ago, I submitted testimony to the Joint Ways and Means Committee, representing the position of the UAUO on the proposed institutional board. (It was thrown together quickly, and has some typos, but does represent the essence of our arguments.) It included ideas for a more rigorous process for selecting nominees for “Membership on the institutional board”, which are as relevant now as they were then: https://olis.leg.state.or.us/liz/2013R1/Downloads/CommitteeMeetingDocument/27071
Thanks for this reminder of your testimony Peter. Here’s a post on how the Board was actually appointed:

And thanks for your reality-check re-post – I had missed the original post while on the road for a year, operating under a self-imposed UO news blackout. It induced a nice, warm, idealistic and naive feeling.
